Dear Friends in the League:

The League year is gathering momentum. Many Leagues are looking forward to meeting with their state legislators to make a friendly connection and present our League priorities. The Legislative Priority Brochure for 2014 will be available soon. Thank you for your thoughtful input.

The League is expanding its already substantial role in advocating for a healthier sustainable environment and slowing down climate change. We have joined the Maryland Clean Agriculture Coalition to work on farmland pollution problems that are affecting our waterways. We are sponsoring the Maryland Crosslands 2013 Tour to raise awareness of the problems of the Cove Point Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal in Calvert County. See the schedule of the remaining stops in this newsletter.

And we are getting on with our Livable Future for Maryland Campaign to educate Marylanders on the importance of clean water legislation-- like the storm water management fund--and land use planning. These are just a few of our efforts to work with allies to hand to our children and grandchildren a better world.

You are asking for good speakers for League programs. We are compiling a list, but we need your input.  If you have a good speaker, let us know so we can share that information. That request really goes for any subject, but right now we are seeking speakers on climate change, clean waterways, and land use planning.

Nancy Soreng was cited by the Chesapeake Climate Action Network at the Annapolis Crosslands Tour stop Nov. 5 for her hard working efforts in leading a successful campaign for wind power legislation in Maryland. The League and I received similar appreciation for our efforts to increase clean renewable energy.

Interest in our Leagues is gathering as we use more social media to spread the word on our activities. Thank you to Linda Rittelmann and Alice Giles for helping this happen and to all of you who are keeping the League in the public eye, by press, radio or on the e-waves. That is part of our mission—speaking out and being noticed.

Look for us on TV!  Due to the generosity of WBAL11, Sherry and Jon Hyman, and Jon’s TV production friends, the League of Women Voters of Maryland will appear in a TV Ad promoting membership in the League. The 30-second spots will air at random in November and December.  Our “actors” are Alice Giles, Yara Cheikh, Linda Rittelmann, Atari Muhammad, Lu Pierson, Paul Arnest, and Susan Cochran.  After January 1, WJZ will air the spots as a public service announcement.

Keep up the good work!
