The League of Women Voters Maryland is looking for an intern that is excited about empowering voters and learning about issue based advocacy to join our team.

The Voter Empowerment & Legislative Intern will work closely with the State Director in a variety of aspects of the organization. A large portion of the internship will be focused on voter empowerment as we head towards the November election, but will also include legislative advocacy work and nonprofit management.

POTENTIAL INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES INCLUDE

Educating Voters

• Raising awareness online and through events about the 2020 elections
• Updating online resources for Voter’s on the LWVMD website and on social media
• Participating in coalition work to collaborate and reach every Marylander with the tools they need to vote
• Working with a voter database to enable volunteers to reach voters with updated information on the elections amid COVID-19 through phone banking and text messaging 

Legislative Advocacy

• Participate in LWVMD’s efforts to raise awareness of and advocate for democracy issues in Maryland, e.g. redistricting reform, voting in jail, public campaign finance
• Coordination with League members on various issue-based advocacy activities that include participation on coalition led campaigns, member outreach, and events
• Participate in preparation for the legislative session which may include attending advocacy forums and legislative tracking meetings.
• Learning about and assisting in the development of engaging online messaging/campaigns via blog, Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram posts 

Nonprofit Management

• Learning about and assisting with grassroots volunteer coordination, communication, and engagement
• Participating in fundraising efforts
• Assisting with event & workshop planning and coordination
• Assisting with outreach and coordination regarding member recruitment and retention
• Coordination with local chapters of LWVMD as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS: As a volunteer-run grassroots organization, it is important the intern is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift quickly. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize shifting duties efficiently. The intern must have the ability to be flexible and balance multiple projects. Experience with GSuite, Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, Facebook, Twitter, and basic office equipment is a must. Experience with NationBuilder, Salesforce and other online organizing tools is a plus. The intern should also be interested in promoting and increasing activism through engaging social media content.

COMPENSATION: This is a paid internship at the rate of $11.00/hour for a total of 120 hours. Ideally, the intern will be available to work two 5-hour days in the Annapolis LWVMD office over 12-14 weeks from on or about 9/14/2020 – 12/22/20. Parking reimbursement up to $150 is also available.

COVID-19 WORK PLAN: At the outset, work will be conducted in-person at LWVMD’s offices in Annapolis to facilitate training and supervision by the State Director. The intern will conduct their work in an adjacent office so as to maintain social distance. Face-to-face interactions will be limited and will require the wearing of masks. Remote work will be allowed as it becomes possible and required if necessary.

LWVMD is happy to discuss any special project proposals the intern would like to accomplish during their internship period, and provide guidance as needed and is willing to accommodate students who wish to earn college credit.
